Your child's planner will be a key tool for communication between teachers, students, and parents this year. Every day, your child is expected to write down their homework assignments and due dates. I typically allow for 3 minutes at the end of each class to let students write down their assignments and then do a quick check around the room to make sure there are no empty planners. If your child does not have homework that evening, it is my expectation that students still write "no homework" in their planners to help students and parents keep track of nightly tasks. Homework assignments are always posted on a white board in my room and are updated daily. Please sign your child's planner each night so that I know you checked over their homework.
This is what you can typically expect to see in your child's planner each night:
Language Arts:
-Occasional homework in vocabulary books or writing assignments. Often times, students are able to complete these assignments in class.
Math:
-Study Link page(s) for that day's lesson.
-If students did not finish in-class work in their Math Lesson Books, this will be assigned as homework as well.
-Occasionally I send home extension pages or extra credit assignments for students to work on.
-Friday's: Problem Solving Packet (most finish during class time).
Spanish: Varies by lesson.
Reading:
-Scholastic News (sent home Monday's, due on Friday's) most weeks. This should be completed with a parent.
-Spelling: we will go through the spelling sorts on Monday during class time. Students should study throughout the week. Tests are on Friday.
-Students should be reading 20 minutes each night, as this will help them develop fluency, vocabulary, and background knowledge.
-Novel study reading assignments (if they did not finish in class).
Please note that homework assignments are not found on any of the fourth grade websites. Fourth grade is a huge developmental step for students as they are now developmentally ready to take on more and more responsibility themselves, including keeping track of their homework assignments. It is the expectation that students (with the help of their teacher) will write down their assignments for each night in their planner. This important skill is sometimes a challenge for students at the beginning of the year, but please don't worry! Students will have this skill mastered at the end of the year.
The planner is also a great place to write quick notes to me. If you plan to pick your child up for an appointment, noticed that your child was struggling with a homework assignment, need to ask for an extension on an assignment, or have any other notes that you would like to quickly communicate with me, please feel free to write these down in your child's planner. Otherwise you can always send me an email.
